Aluminum version or polyester version

there are about 10000 printing plants in the world using polyester version, and about 600 in Germany, mainly used in B3 size (36cm × 52cm). Since drupa2004, innovative printers have also used B2 size (52cm × 74cm) polyester version. However, the commonly used B3 small size is still the main type, and most small enterprises use this type of printing plate. In Germany, nearly 8500 printing plants with less than 10 people mainly operate in this small size range, and 600 users are really not many, accounting for only 7%. The sales proportion of small-scale aluminum CTP system manufacturers is not high. Therefore, someone raised the question: can the figure of CTP system of aluminum version catch up with that of CTP system of polyester version

it is undeniable that the printer subconsciously dislikes the polyester version. However, after testing and comparing the quality and economy of the two versions, the reservations about the polyester version become superfluous

in Table 1, the investment and production standards of CTP for polyester version and aluminum version are scored respectively. These scores affect the investment quality of the system, especially the production cost. The following are analyzed and discussed one by one

→ CTP system investment

Table 2 lists the CTP systems used for aluminum plate and polyester plate imaging. It is worth noting that the supply of polyester version system is only slightly different from that of aluminum version system. The varieties supplied by CTP must be greater than the demand. All manufacturers hope that the crux of investment can be solved in small printing plants at some time. At present, there are only two polyester version systems available for B2 size

b3 size CTP system investment includes functional system with Rip RIP software recorder integrated punching device and off-line/processor inner drum and outer drum aluminum plate system. The price is between 62000 and 92000 euros. The quotation for polyester CTP system with comparable structure of aluminum version system is 30000 and 60000 euros

the price score ratio of polyester version system to aluminum version system is 2:1

→ printing plate cost

whether it is silver halide photopolymerization or thermal aluminum plate, or polyester based silver halide plate, its cost is roughly the same, and the price depends on individual agreements. Agfa and Kodak GCG have recently raised their printing plate prices by several percentage points, and we should unswervingly promote the elimination of excess capacity. The price score ratio of polyester version and aluminum version is 1:1, which is the same

aluminum plate needs to be developed, washed and glued. The developer of the polyester version has been placed in its emulsion and only needs to be activated and stabilized. Because the cleaning cost of polyester version is less and the replacement interval is long, chemicals and treatment costs can be saved. for B2 size automatic models, the price of version box and connection bridge alone is about 75000 euros

for B3 size, the printing plate usually needs less, and this automatic system is expensive. Therefore, these devices are not provided. The B3 size Aluminum CTP generally adopts manual processing of printing plate. At 2400~2540dpi, the maximum output is mostly 20 plates per hour. Since it is not continuous production, the starting and auxiliary time shall be included, so the utilization rate is 75%. In fact, 15 printing plates are output every hour, and the version is changed every 4 minutes. Taking the monthly demand of 600 PCs as an example, it is equivalent to the workload of an employee of 40 hours per month. Based on the hourly wage of 45 euros, almost 22000 euros will be paid every year, which is a considerable expense for small enterprises. All polyester CTP systems are fully automatic. They are processed with 61m long coiled materials, and some of them are equipped with a second version box as an option. The cost of replacing the coiled material is insignificant in a few minutes

→ floor area

almost every small printing enterprise lacks land. The development section of the polyester version system is mostly integrated in the recorder or directly connected with the recorder, so only a small site is required. → operation under sunlight

→ printing resistance

high printing resistance is an obvious advantage of aluminum plate. The printing resistance of silver halide aluminum plate reaches 350000, that of photopolymer and thermal plate is about 200000, and that of non-processing plate is about 100000. Photopolymer and thermosensitive plates can be baked, with printing resistance up to one million. The polyester version has the lowest printing resistance, only 20000 printing. But most small businesses take on short-term jobs. In special cases, a second set of printing plates can be prepared, which is much cheaper than high investment. The comparison result of printing resistance score is that the ratio of aluminum plate to polyester plate is 1:1

→ 70 lines/cm point mass

70 lines/cm additional lines have replaced the 60 lines/cm standard additional lines. Almost all printing houses have confirmed that polyester printing and aluminum printing have the same quality. Some silver digiplate polyester users have printed with 80 lines/cm. The comparison results of the two printing plates were 1 ∶ 1

→ frequency modulation or mixing

frequency modulation or mixing can optimize printing quality and enhance contact with customers. Mitsubishi also provides an FM point with FM silverdot, which can combine am with FM (cross modulation). For example: FM image printing, am plus text and light tone printing. The comparison results of the two printing plates were 1 ∶ 1

→ plate resolution

plate resolution plays a decisive role in the reproduction of fine levels in frequency modulation and fine printing. The resolution of different printing plates is as follows:

· silver halide plate: 80 lines/cm is 1%~99%

· photopolymer version: 2%~98% for 80/cm

· thermal version: 1% ~9% for 80 lines/cm (some up to 100 or 120 lines/cm)

· processing free printing plate: 80 lines/cm is 1%~99% of the ultimate use of the material

· polyester version: 3%~97% for 70 threads/cm

point diameter comparison shows that the difference is small. For 2% of the point coverage area, the point with 70 lines/cm is 23 μ m. Point of 80 lines/cm is 20 μ m. The point of 100 lines/cm is 16 μ m. Point of 120 lines/cm is 13.5 μ m。 Compared with the resolution, the aluminum version: Polyester version is 1:1

→ hourly output

when the resolution of small-size aluminum plate CTP system is 2400 or 2500dpi, the hourly output is 13~24 plates (mostly 20 plates), and the actual efficiency is reduced to 75%. However, when the CTP system of polyester version has the same resolution, its output is between 17 and 28 plates, and the utilization rate almost reaches the highest output. The comparison result of the two was 1 ∶ 1

→ in machine punching

this is a prerequisite for full-automatic production. Among the seven CTP systems of polyester version, five systems are equipped with in machine punching devices. The punching device is also integrated in the CTP system of four aluminum plates. Because the printing plate is usually processed manually, it is not absolutely necessary to punch in the machine. The comparison result of the two is still 1:1

→ development standard

the development standard should be stable and repeatable. The difference of development temperature and regeneration will affect the quality of printing plate. Because the developing chemical agent is placed in the polyester plate emulsion, the fluctuation range is so small that it costs very little to measure the plate density and correct the exposure value. The comparison result is that the ratio of polyester plate to aluminum plate is 2:1

→ no treatment/no chemical treatment printing plate

the external drum CTP system uses infrared diode imaging, so it is not clear whether the current B3 size external drum system, which is harmful to the health of painters, is suitable for this kind of plate imaging. Since the sensitivity of this printing plate is lower than that of the standard thermal plate, the output will be reduced. However, Fujifilm's brilliant pro-T printing plate has a sensitivity comparable to that of the thermal plate

Fujifilm plans to launch a processing free printing plate for purple laser imaging on inner drum and flat CTP system in 2007. The premise is that it can provide high-power diodes. Therefore, there are still some problems to be solved

no development is a significant advantage, but the price of no treatment printing plate is 20%~30% higher than that of standard CTP printing plate. If the annual edition does not exceed 7000~8000 square meters, the treatment free and chemical treatment free printing plates within the B2 size range can be considered

due to the appropriate investment cost (the price of Mitsubishi/ASCO dpx-4 B2 size CTP system is 70000 euros), fully automatic processing and low personnel cost are also a favorable choice for B2 size polyester imaging. The same premise is also applicable to B3 size. The cost difference of this small size is more obvious

therefore, it is possible that the treatment free polyester version will be available in the near future. If you have reservations about the polyester version, you will never find a reason. Instead, you need to take up a pen and calculator to calculate the cost

If the price of traditional printing plate is only half of the price of purple laser or thermal plate, the extra cost than other systems will soon bring benefits. The greater the printing plate consumption of the printing plant, the more money will be saved by replacing the traditional printing plate
